Scout
Overview of the Scout position
The Scout Operational Unit is in command of the Evac Scene and is responsible for the safety of all personnel at the Evac Scene. A Scout Operational Unit has at least 2 personnel with at least one of them being trained to the Operation Level.
Scout Duties
The Scout Operational Unit is usually the first personnel into the field so they can gather information on the Fire situation. Scouts will evaluate properties prior to bring in Evac personnel for necessity and safety. During an Evac, Scouts fill the Lookout and Safety Officer positions and are in Command of the Evac.
Training
Scouts receive more Wildland Fire Training than any other Evac Unit. Scout Training follows NFPA, NWCG and AFR Standards. In addition to ICS FEMA Classes, S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire, S-130 and annual Rt-130 that all Evac personnel should take. Scouts take an S-131/G-131 class.
The Distant Learning AFR Scout Training classes are listed below and will help the Scout become or retain Operational status.

Animal Rescue in a Fire Dept.
The following video shows some of the gear on a Fire Rescue Squad. The whole video is interesting but at the end they show a horse packaging slide. Animal Rescue is becoming a recognized part of the fire service. The Standard is to not use the same gear on people as you do on a large animal rescue so most Fire Departments are glad to have a resource that has gear designated to only Animal Rescue. Resources like the San Diego Humane Society – Technical Rescue Team, that carries all the same rope rescue gear as a Fire Rescue Squad, but is Animal Rescue specific are a valuable tool for the Fire Districts they serve.
Water Rescue – Throw-bag Fundamentals
This video shows the different ways to deploy throw-bags to a victims. Pay special attention to the directions the instructor gives to the victim in the water.
